It's been a busy race calendar for the Avon Valley Runners during the fine weather of recent days and it kicked off with some hot paced racing at the Keevil Airfield on Saturday 10th May. Two flat laps of a 5k tarmac circuit, looked geared towards some fast times and the Avon Valley Runners saw Tom Frost, Will Whitmore, Doug Barber and James Hart all finish in under 39 minutes and in the top 10 overall at the Keevil 10k.
In stark contrast the following day's Cowpat Canter at Midsomer Norton was completely tarmac free and even had stiles, ponds and a river to negotiate. Doug Barber turned out for the second day running and finished in 13th place overall and first home for the Avon Valley Runners. Andy Grist was close behind him followed by Kevin Grover as third placed man.
Sophie Grist had a great run to bring the ladies home, finishing just a few minutes behind the top three guys. Sharon Gover and Julia Drewitt were second and third Avon Valley ladies.
Tuesday night's Roundway Chase saw Vojtech Hajdu run brilliantly to win the event outright. No less than seven other Avon Valley men finished in the top 20 and Tina Giles put in a top performance to finish second in the female race. A superb haul on the night for the club and nineteen Avon Valley Runners completed the course in total.

All eyes were on Avon Valley Lady Liz Ringham, who recently led the club to 2nd place in the Vets' Team race at the Bath Half Marathon - and she was on top form once again. Liz finished the race in a new club record of 3:03:21, beating the old record by over four minutes!
James Hart continued his impressive year and finished his maiden marathon in 3:05:38 as the first man home.

A record fifteen thousand runners entered this year's Bath Half Marathon, among them were over sixty Avon Valley Runners who braved the rain at the start line in Great Pultney Street. Unfortunately a contracting glitch meant that the first aid marquee was not in place for the start of the race and enforced an hour's delay to the start. Fortunately during this time the rain stopped and the runners enjoyed cool conditions for the duration of their two lap race.

First back for AVR was 124th placed Kevin Sparey in a time of 1:19:06 from 252nd Tom Frost in 1:24:09, 258th placed Vojtech Hajdu in 1:24:23 and 262nd placed Doug Barber in 1:24:37.

The Avon Valley Runners were in action at the weekend, both locally and internationally. Mike Maidment and George Roberts headed to Spain for the Barcelona Marathon and finished the 26 miles in 3:22:06 and 3:42:24 respectively. Closer to home in the Gloucester 20 Mile Road Race, James Hart finished in an impressive time of 2:16:58, but star of the race and indeed the weekend for Avon Valley Runners, was Liz Ringham. She won her category, finishing the 20 mile course in 2:15:53 and broke the club record in the progress, by around 6½ minutes!
James Hart goes window shopping down Dursley High Street!!!

Vojtech Hajdu led the Avon Valley Runners home for the second time of the year on Sunday and twenty-one of his club mates accompanied him in completing the Slaughterford 9 multi-terrain run.

The race, organised by Chippenham Harriers Running Club, comprises nine miles of steeply undulating countryside, with a total of 900 feet to climb, whilst running along stony paths, fields, tracks and lanes. The recent wet weather meant there was extra mud and water to contend with in 2008 and a cold river to cross as well.
Vojtech's time of 59:08 gave him 6th place overall and 3rd in the Vet 40 category, whilst James Hart continues to improve, finishing second for the club and 31st overall in 1:05:09. Anissia White was the first Avon Valley Runner female home in a time of 1:23:16 and Sue Macgregor was the club's fastest female vet, finishing in 1:30:28.
Any budding runners in the area who fancy training with their local running club, or anyone considering taking up running and in need of advice, can visit the Avon Valley Runners website at www.avonvalleyrunners.org.uk for more information.
Avon Valley Runners turned out in force for the Rough 'n' Tumble 10 at Milton Libourne in the heart of Wiltshire on Sunday. A muddy off-road ten-mile course organised by Grass Roots Events, with some steep climbs and descents as well as some spectacular views from the downs thrown in to boot.

And just when the runners think they've conquered the worst, there's an energy-sapping hill to climb towards the end of the course - often a killer for the first timers, who are prone to christen the climb with all number of uncomplimentary nicknames as they scramble and slide on all fours up the muddy ascent. That didn't stop 524 runners completing the course though in a very impressive turnout for a January event.
First home for Avon Valley Runners was Vojtech Hajdu in 22nd place with a time of 1:16:53. He was followed by 52nd placed Chris Stevens and 59th placed James Hart. The Avon Valley Runners ladies were led home by Joanne Mumford in 158th place overall and she was followed by Kay Middleton and Kathy Kinsey.
In all, eleven Avon Valley Runners took up the challenge and all returned home triumphant having conquered the Rough 'n Tumble 10 and that hellish final hill!
