Forty one members of Avon Valley Runners turned out for the Stan Farr 5K, marking the 50th running of the Boxing Day race started by the club's founder back in 1960 during his days at Trowbridge & District Athletics Club.

This race was the penultimate in the AVR series, top points for the men went to 11th placed Michael Towler in 58:37 (1st Male U21), with James Hart 23rd 1:02:34 second and Carl Davies 48th 1:05:30 consolidating his position at the top of the table with another good performance achieving 18 points by coming in third for AVR.

On Sunday 27th September, six Avon Valley Runners set off for Aldershot to compete in the South of England Athletic Association Road Relays, 'a step up in class' to quote Coach Alan (he was right).

Two teams from Avon Valley Runners lined up on the beach at Weston Super Mare for the inaugural Uphill to Wells Relay. Ahead of them were 29-miles of trails following the West Mendip Way.

Nearly thirty Avon Valley Runners took on the frustrating challenge of the Bradford on Avon Treasure Run. Over the five mile course there were twenty cryptic clues to be de-ciphered including: "How many rats on the roof?", "An alarming former London Marathon sponsor and did too", the obligatory anagram "Racial Pleaduff" and the contentious "When is shoeing time?".

Once again there was a good turnout for the 4th Conkwell Killer, this year incorporating a junior run for the first time. The inclement weather held for the runners, although it was quite windy.

On Sunday 21st June, 14 runners from Avon Valley lined up among the 153 to complete the Warminster Forest 10. The course was slightly short this year due to the 20/20 taking place at the race venue of Warminster Cricket Club.

Avon Valley was represented at the Neolithic Events by 6 of its members. The Marathon which follows the Sarsen Trail, a 26-mile route across undulating Wiltshire countryside with stunning views across the Vale of Pewsey and the Avon Valley

In Grove, Oxfordshire, 5 members of Avon Valley Runners took part in the White Horse Half Marathon. The event is run on a fast, flat rural course, around beautiful countryside through the villages of Denchworth and Chaney Bassett.

The race winner was Paul Farmer form Ampthill & Flitwick Flyers RC in a time of 1:12:06, first Lady was 22nd placed Charlotte Penfold from Bournmouth AC in 1:21:57.

For Avon Valley, Jackie Rockliffe was first to complete the course, her first Half Marathon since the birth of her Baby in September; Jackie was 101st in a time of 1:32:57. Along with Jackie, 189th Kathy Kinsey 1:43:13 and 206th Ali Atkinson 1:45:24 earned Avon Valley the 3rd Team prize.

Other AVR results were 242nd Tina Vivian 1:49:16 and 270th Gary Jardine 1:51:33

Glorious sunshine greeted the 150 runners who lined up for the Trowbridge 10K and the good weather in recent days meant that the two lap course around Southwick Country Park was pretty firm underfoot and provided some good times. First man back was Phil Westlake of Bitton Road Runners recording a time of thirty six minutes and forty seven seconds, followed just 17 seconds later by Michael Towler of Team Bath and third placed Steve Newcastle who led the Avon Valley Runners team including 4th placed Alistair Bartlett and 5th placed Michael Bryant to the team prize. The first lady home was Diane Hier of Warminster followed by Jayne Baggio of Tring and Leanne Tiley also from Warminster.

Among the 11,000 competitors taking part in this years Bath Half Marathon were 44 runners from Avon Valley.

What a glorious day it was for early spring, with temperature in the mid to high teens and very little windy, made for some impressive performances!

This was my first "race" for over seven months and so a suitably low key event was chosen. Given that it was in the grounds of Wilton House and provided an opportunity to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation my wife and kids decided to take part as well, they were going to serve as my pacemakers as they tackled one of the ~5K laps whilst I tried to catch them on my way to completing two laps. About three hundred runners lined up outside of Wilton House and enjoyed a mass warm up before launching into the run.

Sunday 22nd February saw the 5th Annual running of "The Terminator"

Pewsey Vale Running Club hosts this event, with the course starting from Pewsey School, being 11(ish) miles of Footpaths, Tracks, X Country and a small amount of Road. With some significant hills to give you a nice rest on the down leg!

A small group of Avon Valley Runners took on a race with a difference - the annual Trowbridge Pancake Race. The race is staged along the pedestrianised section of Fore Street and runners must run its length and back again stopping five times at predetermined points to flip a pancake under the watchful eye of an adjudicator.

Sunday 15th February saw the return of the Bramley 20/10; the event had been cancelled in 2008 due to major road works in the Village. Organised by Reading Road Runners, the two race distances are combined into one event, with Athletes selecting to enter the 10 mile race or in a warm up to London Marathon the more challenging 20 mile race.

This year's Rough and Tumble in Milton Lilbourne, Wiltshire, was rough and few did tumble, as the cold hard frosts from the previous week had thawed overnight leaving the terrain under foot a blend of ice and mud. Along with the gusting winds the conditions only helped to add to the overall experience of this challenging 10-mile cross-country race.

In sub freezing conditions 9 runners from Avon Valley took part in the New Year Gloucester 10 mile road race.
