Report: Trowbridge Pancake Race

A small group of Avon Valley Runners took on a race with a difference - the annual Trowbridge Pancake Race. The race is staged along the pedestrianised section of Fore Street and runners must run its length and back again stopping five times at predetermined points to flip a pancake under the watchful eye of an adjudicator.

After watching "Trowbridge Ted" outkick the "Hungry Horse" to win the mascots race - it was the turn of the Men.

Carl Davies blasted off like an Olympic sprinter whilst Wrinty & Hodd who were probably the two oldest participants in the race, set off at a more sedate pace. Carl meanwhile crossed the finish line first to record his first ever "race victory". Next back for AVR was Wrinty, despite having been overtaken at one point by Hodd's pancake. Hodd however was forced to make several detours into shop doorways to retrieve an errant pancake and followed the field home.

Trying to emulate dad, five-year old Theo Davies finished second in the children's race.

The relay started with Hodd adopting a more cautious approach to tossing a pancake and managed to keep it in the pan before handing over to eight-year old Kira Wrintmore (who had stepped in as a last minute replacement). Wrinty then set off in pursuit of the leading runners before handing over to Carl to bring the team home in third place behind "Fitness First" & "The Hungry Horse". To celebrate our athletic endeavours Children's charity Amber had laid on complimentary pancakes to all finishers.

Now to do it all again on Tuesday in Bradford on Avon!
