Avon Valley Mile

Sport Relief Mile

The Avon Valley Mile was first held in 2006 as part of the Sport Relief event staged in Barton Farm Country Park, Bradford on Avon. The run takes place over a measured mile of 1609 metres or 1760 yards starting adjacent to the slipway near to Barton Packhorse Bridge, running down towards Avoncliff but doubling back by the Pump house and finishing near to the Park Information Board.

Avon Valley Mile 2008

As a precursor to the main Sport Relief Mile an Elite Mens and Elite Ladies Mile races were held, with Ewan Malloch (4:22) of the British Milers Club and Jess Whitmore (5:29) of City of Bath AC recording the best times of the day. AVR club records were also set in the same event with third placed Michael Bryant recording 4:47 and in the Ladies race, third placed Jackie Rockliffe recorded 5:37.

Enabling the Avon Valley Runners present, who were supporting the Sport Relief Mile to have a opportunity to test out their fast-twitch muscle fibres, an Avon Valley Mile was held once the general public had vacated.

Such was it's success that it has since stuck as an annual fixture in the Avon Valley Runners race calendar.

Sadly in 2014 Tony Bartlett one of Avon Valley Runners long standing members passed away. In 2013 Tony took part in his last AVR mile, he was always around to support AVR events and there to encourage athelets of all abilities. He will be sadly missed but as a mark of respect the Spring Avon Valley Mile has been renamed to the Tony Bartlett Mile.

In 2012 Ruth Barnes lowered the ladies record to 5:18 a time that she equalled in the 2013 running of the event, whilst also in 2013 Michael Towler took the Men's club mile record down to 4:37 at the event.

Registration is from 6:45 with first run at 7:15

The 2017 running of the Avon Valley mile will be on:

Thursday 6th April 2017 &

Thursday 7th September 2017.
